Distinguished colleagues:

In accordance with the plans of International Society for Information Studies (IS4SI) and multi-national universities and institutions, the 3rd IS4SI Summit will be held in the University of California, Berkeley, USA, from June 1 to 7, 2019. The 4th International Conference on Philosophy of Information (ICPI) is one of its conferences.

The ICPI has its predecessors in conferences held in Xi’an, China in October 2013, Vienna, Austria in June 2015, and Gothenburg, Sweden in June 2017. These conferences brought together scientists and philosophers in the academic field and industry from all over the world, and have achieved fruitful results.

Since the 3rd International Conference on Philosophy of Information (ICPI), the world has witnessed a new development of studies on philosophy of information. Based on that, we propose the theme and topics of the 4th ICPI, as well as certain research topics in related fields. Hereinafter, we present here our call for papers from you and your institutions and communities.

 

Overall Theme of the ICPI 2019 Conference

The overall theme is the Philosophy of Information and the Development of the Intelligent Society. Key included topics are the philosophical foundations and systems aspects of the intelligent society.

 

Objectives

Scientists, philosophers and futurists have made different proposals for the development of an intelligent human society, based on the rapid development of the Internet, virtual reality, deep learning, nanotechnology, quantum information science, bioengineering, human enhancement technology, and the science and technology of artificial intelligence. Among them, there have been various schools of thought, pessimistic and/or optimistic. It is necessary to make serious analyses and research from the perspectives of philosophy of information, and to make reasonable responses by absorbing the reasonable factors and criticizing the subjective and semi-sci-fi renderings of current thoughts.

One of the important aspects is the comparative study of concepts, ideas and theories in information science, philosophy of information and related fields. This aspect involves the deepening and expansion of the basic theories of philosophy of information. In addition, the development prospects of intelligent society, related ethical issues, political and economic institutional issues are also our focus. Besides, the possible prospects for the intelligent society will certainly prompt us to re-understand the nature of human beings and new evolution of human beings.

A number of specific research directions are presented as below for your reference.

 

Scope and Topics

  1. Information, data, knowledge, meaning, symbol and intelligent relationship.

  2. Predictive analysis of possible prospects for a future intelligent society: including new political systems and economic systems that may be formed, new organizational and dynamic models of social development, new ideas and models for education; military methods based on information wars; human development models, etc.

  3. Studies on human society, human nature, new modes of human evolution in the context of the future intelligent society.

  4. Studies on our thinking about relationship between nature and society, human and society, human and nature, human and others, human and machine, the future development of human and other areas as well as related ethics and value principles, in the context of a future intelligent society.

  5. Studies on human cultural conception model, lifestyle and other related areas in the context of the future intelligent society.

  6. Studies on the positive and negative effects of the development of a future intelligent society and the analysis of corresponding coping strategies.

  7. Researches to deepen the basic theory of philosophy of information and to explore new branches.

  8. Philosophical issues in emerging information technology and intelligent technology development.
